Library Research Toolkit Series: Visualizing Data with PolicyMap and Social Explorer

Library Research Toolkit Series: Visualizing Data with PolicyMap and Social Explorer Online

Kean University's Learning Commons provides access to databases that empower students and faculty to explore and visualize data across diverse topics. This workshop will spotlight two powerful tools: PolicyMap and Social Explorer.

  • PolicyMap is a dynamic mapping platform that enables users to visualize U.S. data from a broad spectrum of sources -- including government and nonprofit datasets -- on topics such as demographics, education, employment, health, housing, and quality of life.

  • Social Explorer offers access to current and historical U.S. Census data, as well as datasets from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and U.S. County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:

  1. Access data and statistics resources via the Databases A–Z page.
  2. Use PolicyMap to create and save custom maps and export datasets as .csv files.
  3. Use Social Explorer to generate maps and reports, save visualizations, and export data into SPSS or Excel for analysis

We encourage you to explore other workshops in the Library Research Toolkit Series to further enhance your research skills.
