Elevate Your Research: Advanced Database Searching Strategies for Graduate Students In-Person / Online

Tailored specifically for graduate students, this workshop will delve into advanced database search techniques. We will build on basic searches by using Boolean operators with nesting, conducting field-specific searches, and leveraging database thesauri for controlled vocabulary and subject headings. We will also review common database functions, such as search alerts and journal alerts. The live session will also provide attendies with the opportunity to discuss complex search challenges and receive personalized advice for your research projects.

Learning Objectives:

  • The workshop will highlight key subject-focused resources accessible through the Databases A-Z page.
  • The workshop will cover Periodicals A-Z as an entry point to the digital periodicals collection.
  • The workshop will feature basic to advanced database searching strategies that will produce relevant search results for topics of interest.
  • The workshop will introduce how members of the Kean community may use Google Scholar to access full-text articles for free through Kean's library databases.
  • The workshop will introduce common productivity functions -- such as, search alerts, citation alerts, and journal alerts -- available through many databases.
  • The workshop will feature key Learning Support and Research Support services for graduate students available through the Learning Commons.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be aware of and able to access the search interfaces for WorldCat Discovery and more than 250 multidisciplinary and subject-focused databases to which Kean University subscribes.
  • Participants will be able to develop and implement database search strategies that will help them access relevant books/ebooks, journal articles, data, and other relevant information sources.
  • Participants will be able to revise Google Scholar settings in order to access "Full Text @ Kean University."
  • Participants will be able to set up search alerts, citation alerts, journal alerts, and other database productivity functions.
  • Participants will be aware of and able to access research and learning support through LibChat as well as appointments with librarians and tutors/coaches from Writing Services, Tutoring, and the Public Speaking Lab.
